05/07/2010 - Santa Clara, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The surging New York Red Bulls travel to San Jose to take on the Earthquakes in Major League Soccer action on Saturday night.
After finishing the 2009 season in last place overall in MLS, New York has won five of six to start the 2010 season, and currently sits atop the Eastern Conference table.
Red Bull is coming off a 2-0 win at D.C. United last Saturday in which two second-half tallies helped the team win it's third straight.
"Sometimes we lacked quality in our passing game but the work rate to get the ball was top class and we were rewarded for it," New York coach Hans Backe said after the win.
With the victory, New York (5-1-0) has already matched its win total from all of last season.
"I've said it many times, but we have around 7 out of 11 players [from last year] that are still in the first lineup," Backe said. "So something has happened to us. During the preseason the work rate was top class. We have 15 points now, someone told me on the way in that we had 15 points in September last year, so it's a difference."
"To be honest with you, I just can't get over the fact that we have five wins," New York defender Mike Petke said. "Maybe we'll sit down and think about that. To be 5-1 in the first 6 games really puts ourselves in a good situation for the rest of the season. It's unbelievable.
San Jose (3-2-0) is in a similar position, doing well early on in 2010 after struggling last season. The club is coming off a 1-0 win over Colorado, which was it's third win in its last four league fixtures.
"I think this league allows you to play well the next year. I mean, we're doing pretty well too, and we weren't very good last year," San Jose coach Frank Yallop told mlssoccer.com about New York's improved play. "I think organization's good in New York. Getting some early wins helps. It's a lot of the same players or similar players as they had last year, but a bit of fortune gets you rolling, and you believe in yourselves and you play well. They're doing that right now."
San Jose will be without midfielder Omar Jasseh on Saturday because of injury, while defender Steven Beitashour is doubtful and midfielder Arturo Alvarez is questionable.
New York will be without midfielders Giorgi Chirgadze and Austin da Luz, defender Kevin Goldthwaite and forward Macoumba Kandji because of injuries, while midfielder Dane Richards is questionable.

Now, it's okay to call the league hypocritical when it releases injury reports, which players have told me only helps bettors. And it's okay to mutter something obscene when the league pretends gambling doesn't help drive TV ratings and fan interest and put money in owners' pockets. But when it supports other forms of gaming? Big Deal. The Bears should put an orange "C" on every deck of cards dealt at Harrah's in Joliet; the Eagles should slap their logo on roulette wheels at the Borgata in Atlantic City; the Dolphins should hold training camp at the El San Juan in Puerto Rico.
Seriously.
The NFL's problem, when it comes to the gambling world, isn't hypocrisy, it's worse: The bosses lack vision. That's why the league is picking unwinnable fights in Delaware and taking pot shots from critics after making smart sponsorship deals. Roger Goodell and his gang are acting and thinking locally rather than globally, which is rare for them, especially compared to their professional (and amateur) counterparts.
The NBA held its All Star game in Las Vegas and David Stern's kingdom didn't crumble (although the town did bring plenty of players to their knees.) I'd say it's 6 to 5 and pick 'em that Lebron will make a road swing through Sin City before his career is over.
Even the NCAA College Football Betting is more progressive on this issue than the NFL. Several years ago Rachel Newman Baker, college sports' gambling czar, opened a dialogue with Vegas bookmakers to learn about how they do business. She's visited Nevada sports books, studied their operations and listened to how they regulate action. Now she knows she can expect a call from bookmakers, who lose money when sports are fixed, if they think something sketchy is going on in NCAA games. She's not in favor of sports betting, but, as she once told me, "I know it's not going away, either."
The NFL can't seem to accept that. And until it can find peace with the idea, it'll get flack, even when it's right.
