Ducks stay in playoff hunt as Koivu nets SO winner

Hockey Betting Lines

04/04/2010 - Los Angeles, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Saku Koivu scored the lone goal of the shootout to help the Anaheim Ducks take a 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings in the opener of a home-and-home set from the Staples Center.

Koivu was the last shooter and skated in on net with a backhand-to-forehand move to beat Jonathan Quick for the win.

It gave Anaheim 85 points on the season, four back of Calgary and Colorado for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Koivu scored the Ducks' lone goal of regulation and Curtis McElhinney made 28 stops in the win for Anaheim, which has won four of its last five games.

"We desperately needed these points," said Koivu. "And this second point, at this point, is critical. We've got to win these all until the end and get help from other teams but we are going to push until the end."

Los Angeles now has 95 points on the season and sits seventh in the conference, one point back of Detroit for the sixth spot.

Jack Johnson hade the only goal for the Kings, who had won their previous two games. Quick made 32 stops in the loss.

These two teams will meet in Anaheim on Tuesday.

Los Angeles grabbed the lead with 19.3 seconds left in the first period on the power play as Johnson blasted a slapper from the high slot that found its way through traffic.

The second period went scoreless as McElhinney made 10 stops and Quick turned aside nine to keep the score at 1-0.

A hooking penalty on Jarret Stoll gave Anaheim a power play with 2:13 to play and the Ducks pulled McElhinney for a 6-on-4 advantage. The move paid off as Koivu stuffed in a loose puck at the right post to send the game to overtime.

"Being able to get a point out of it is good, every point we can get now means we are inching closer to clinching that playoff spot," said Quick. "We wanted two here, and gave it away in the last minute, but it is good to at least get that one point."

MySportsbook.com Posts Heisman Trophy Odds

With 3,919 passing yards, 32 touchdowns and a mere seven interceptions last season, combined with a powerful South Bend Heisman legacy, odds makers at MySportsbook.com have given Notre Dame senior quarterback Brady Quinn the best Heisman Trophy odds at 5-2.

Quinn isn’t the only big man on campus this season.  Oklahoma junior running back and 2004 Heisman runner-up Adrian Peterson, listed at 7-2, rushed for a combined 3,033 yards in his first two years as a college player and will give Quinn a run for his money.

This online sportsbook has also listed Troy Smith, Ohio State senior quarterback, as another strong favorite to win the 72nd Heisman Trophy.  A 7-1 bet, Smith threw for 2,282 yards last season and also led the Buckeyes to a convincing 34-20 victory over Quinn and the Fighting Irish in last season’s Fiesta Bowl.
