02/13/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Los Angeles Kings will try to avoid a third straight loss since posting the longest winning streak in club history as they host the Colorado Avalanche tonight at Staples Center.
The Kings have lost two straight since a nine-game winning streak that ran from January 21-February 6. That burst came to an end with a loss at Anaheim on Monday before Thursday night's 3-2 shootout setback at home to Edmonton.
Dustin Brown and Ryan Smyth scored in the final nine minutes of the third period, but the Oilers' Lubomir Visnovsky bested Erik Ersberg in the 10th round of the extra session for the game-winner. The 10-round shootout was the longest in Kings' history.
"Both of the goals we scored we were getting traffic in front of the net, and we were banging away," said Los Angeles forward Anze Kopitar.
Ersberg was making his first start since January 11 and eighth appearance on the season with regular starter Jonathan Quick out with flu-like symptoms. Quick is expected to return tonight, however.
Los Angeles has still won six of its last eight at home and is tied with Colorado for the fifth spot in the Western Conference.
The Avalanche drew even with the Kings in the standings, as well as back into a first-place tie with the Canucks in the Northwest Division, with last night's 2-1 home win over the Coyotes.
Rookie center Matt Duchene scored both of Colorado's goals, including the game-winner late in the third period on a deflection of Brett Clark's point shot. Duchene, the third overall pick of the 2009 draft, leads all NHL rookies with 20 goals and 42 points.
"I think our first period and third period were pretty good," Duchene said. "I think the second period we didn't play our best. That team discourages you and we just dug down deep like we did last game against Atlanta [on Wednesday] and came out with two points tonight."
Craig Anderson stopped 33-of-34 shots for the Avalanche, who finished off a perfect four-game homestand but is just 15-11-4 as the guest this year.
Tonight marks the first meeting of the season between the Avalanche and Kings and first since Colorado dealt Smyth to Los Angeles on July 3 for Kyle Quincey, Tom Preissing and a 2010 fifth-round draft pick.
Smyth, who missed 15 games due to an upper-body injury this year, has 19 goals and 38 points in 45 games with the Kings after posting 40 goals and 96 points in the previous two seasons with Colorado.
Quincey, meanwhile, has 20 assists and 25 points in 60 games with the Avalanche. He totaled four goals and 34 assists in 72 games with the Kings last year, his first and only season with the club.
Colorado has won three of the four matchups in each of the previous two seasons and has won four straight in Los Angeles. The Avs haven't lost at the Staples Center since February 24, 2007.

In terms of sports wagering, the NFL is "the most popular game in town." The explanation behind that is easy.
It is called the "pointspread."
Many years ago, NFL games, as well as the more popular college games, used straight odds as a vehicle for betting. For example, if the Bears were playing the Giants, and it shaped up as a competitive contest, the Bears might be, say, a 7/5 favorite. If they were playing an also-ran, it might be 10/1. Well, there is a point where a line becomes prohibitive, as far as betting the favorite. And who would waste money betting an underdog that has virtually no chance? Such a setup did not contribute to promoting betting action.
But in modern sports betting, a "pointspread" is used.
A NFL pointspreads are exactly that, a pre-established point difference between the two sides that will, for all intents and purposes, create a handicap that evens things out, and in doing so, produces comparable wagering activity on both sides of that proposition. So in lieu of a odds figure in which to bet the team to win outright, the Bears might be a three-point favorite over the New York Giants, and a 17-point favorite over the also-ran. Now that the team that is the underdog can "get" points, there can be equal action on both sides.
In sportsbooks, this is usually done with efficiency by charging the losing bettors 10% extra - in effect, bettors are laying 11/10 on those games. So they are actually betting $110 to win $100. If they lose, they pay the "vig." If they win, they simply collect.
The establishment of the pointspread as the corner stone around which team sports like football can be wagered upon was truly what brought gridiron betting into the stratosphere for online football betting .
