02/06/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Colorado Avalanche have struggled since posting their longest winning streak of the season, a trend they will try to reverse tonight in the opener of a four-game homestand versus the Edmonton Oilers at Pepsi Center.
The Avalanche have lost four of five since a six-game win streak, including a 5-3 setback in Nashville on Thursday. Matt Duchene, Cody McLeod and Justin Mercier all scored in the loss, with Mercier netting his first career NHL goal in his sixth game.
Craig Anderson allowed all five goals on 36 shots in defeat.
"We didn't work very hard, we didn't do the little things to get calls, to get plays," said Avs defenseman Scott Hannan. "You got to play in the offensive zone. We got caught in our own zone, we turned the puck over. We were sloppy in a lot of areas."
Colorado hopes a return home can get it back on track. The Avalanche have won five of their last seven at Pepsi Center, where they are 16-8-2 this year. The club is sixth overall in the Western Conference and trails Vancouver by two points for first place in the Northwest Division.
The Avs will host an Oilers club tonight that has lost eight straight on the road, all in regulation. Edmonton lost the opener of a five-game road trip on Thursday, falling 4-2 in Minnesota.
Mike Comrie, who has missed 30 games this year due to mononucleosis, scored for the first time since November 8, while Marc Pouliot also scored. Jeff Deslauriers, who was coming off a 33-save shutout of the Flyers on Wednesday, made 32 saves.
Edmonton had won two straight since a 0-11-2 stretch and is just 7-16-2 on the road this year.
"We thought we could get another win," Pouliot said. "Everybody was disappointed."
The Oilers and Avalanche have split four meetings this year, with Colorado posting a 6-0 victory in the most recent meeting in Denver on January 18. Anderson made 24 saves in his third career shutout of the Oilers, improving to 4-3-0 with a tie and 2.61 goals-against average lifetime versus the Oilers.
Colorado also halted a three-game series home losing streak with the victory.
Deslauriers is 1-1-0 with a 5.01 GAA in his career against the Avalanche, while recently recalled Bryan Pitton has yet to play in an NHL game.

Oddsmakers have released the odds for the 2009 AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award and Seattle Seahawks linebacker Aaron Curry has been made the opening favorite.
Seattle took Curry with the fourth overall pick in April's NFL draft and plan on inserting him into its starting lineup right away. The Hawks traded linebacker Julian Peterson in the offseason, so Curry is expected to have a significant role in Seattle's defense next year and that's one of the primary reasons he is the favorite to win the NFL ROY Award.
Oddsmakers from online sportsbook MySportsbook.com have made Curry a 5/1 favorite to win this year's NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. Given that he was the best defensive prospect in this year's draft and how he'll have plenty of opportunities to make plays in '09, Curry offers a ton of value at 5/1.
Another thing working for Curry is the position he plays. A linebacker has won the defensive ROY award six straight times and eight of the last nine years. Jerod Mayo, Patrick Willis, DeMeco Ryans, Shawne Merriman, Jonathan Vilma, Terrell Suggs, Kendrell Bell and Brian Urlacher were the most recent linebackers to take home the award.
Following Curry at 5/1 are Tyson Jackson (Chiefs) at 7/1, James Laurinaitas (Rams) at 8/1, Brian Orakpo (Redskins) at 10/1, Rey Maualuga (Bengals) at 10/1 and Jerry Peria (Falcons) at 10/1.
All the players mentioned above are expected to start for their respective teams, but Jackson and Peria are going to have a tough time being recognized on a national level given they're both defensive linemen. D-linemen rarely put up the numbers that it takes to win an individual award like the ROY.
A couple of players with some value are Clay Matthews (Packers) at 12/1 and Larry English (Chargers) at 15/1. Matthews is expected to start at outside linebacker in Green Bay's new 3-4 defense and could rack up a ton of tackles. English, who was an impressive player at Northern Illinois, is expected to be a situational pass rusher for the Chargers and could rack up a ton of sacks.
