Andersson Hed takes Italian Open lead

05/07/2010 - Turin, Italy (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Sweden's Fredrik Andersson Hed shot a six- under 66 in the second round Friday to take a one-stroke lead at the Italian Open.

Chasing his first European Tour win, the 38-year-old Andersson Hed finished 36 holes on the Royal Park course with an eight-under 136 for a slim lead over five players.

Spaniards Miguel Angel Jimenez (68), Alejandro Canizares (66) and Ignacio Garrido (67) shared second place with Belgium's Nicolas Colsaerts (67) and South Africa's Hennie Otto (69) at seven-under 137.

Scotland's Andrew McArthur (66), France's Francois Delamontagne (68) and England's David Horsey (71) were two shots further back at five-under 139.

The top Italian in the field was Matteo Manassero, the 17-year-old rising star who on Thursday became the second-youngest player in European Tour history to make his professional debut.

Manassero, who turned pro earlier in the week, shot his second-consecutive 70 and was part of a large group knotted at four-under 140.

"I'm playing well enough to be in contention and I'm pretty sure about my game going into the weekend," said Manassero. "I'm dreaming a little about winning this tournament and if I keep playing like this I could be close."

Andersson Hed was among the 18 players who needed to finish their first round in the morning after play was suspended Thursday night due to darkness. The start of the tournament was delayed two hours Thursday morning due heavy rain.

After polishing off a 70, Andersson Hed began the second round in a tie for 18th place, three shots off the lead.

He opened the second round with seven straight pars, then made back-to-back birdies before the turn. After four more pars, Andersson Hed vaulted to the top of the leaderboard by playing his final five holes at four-under par.

The run included an eagle at the par-four 14th and birdies at the 15th and 17th holes.

Andersson Hed earned his 2010 tour card through Qualifying School and has posted two top-10 finishes in nine starts this season. But a title still eludes the veteran Swede.

"Some people think I have so much experience," he said, "but if it's been a few years since you were in that position, it feels like a new situation."

None of the co-leaders after the first round were within three shots of Andersson Hed. Paul Lawrie, Graeme Storm and Robert Rock all had 73s and dropped four strokes back at four-under 140, while Marcus Fraser (74) fell five behind.

Last year's winner, Daniel Vancsik, finished two rounds at six-over 150 and missed the cut by six shots.

NOTES: Manassero missed Seve Ballesteros' record for youngest European Tour debut by nine days...He will be 17 years and 20 days old on Sunday...The youngest winner in tour history was Danny Lee, who captured the 2009 Johnnie Walker Classic 213 days after his 18th birthday.

Marlins could start season without No. 2 starter Johnson

JUPITER, Fla. -- The Foorida Marlins are preparing for the likelihood that right-hander
Josh Johnson won't be ready when the season starts April 2.

Grapefruit League action starts Wednesday, but Johnson, penciled in as the No. 2 starter, hasn't even thrown off a mound at full speed since September. He's experienced some soreness in his right forearm.

MySportsbook.com have the Marlins listed with baseball betting lines at +800 to win the NL East this season .

''You guys know the math. If he's not on the hill then he becomes an opening day roster issue,'' manager Fredi Gonzalez said Saturday. ''We're borderline now.''

Johnson, who finished 12-7 with a 3.10 ERA in 2007, was supposed to throw on flat ground Saturday. That was canceled when he woke up with pain.

He played catch on Wednesday with no pain but felt discomfort in a throwing session on Thursday. He's expected to try again Sunday.

''Like we always said from the very beginning, we're going to take it easy on him,'' Gonzalez said. ''He didn't feel right, so we shut him down. We're going to take it back to step one and see where we're at.''

Among the candidates to take Johnson's spot in the rotation are left-hander Chris George and right-handers Yusmeiro Petit and Jose Garcia.

Right-hander Sergio Mitre, who missed most of last season with arm and shoulder problems, also is behind.

With Johnson's status doubtful, Gonzalez said right-hander Ricky Nolasco will stay in the rotation and no longer will be considered a candidate for closer.

Mayweather picked to beat De La Hoya
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA -- Golden Boy Oscar De La Hoya and his rival Floyd Mayweather Jr. arrived at the MGM Grand here Wednesday amid the pomp and pandemonium befitting two of the biggest stars in the sport who are about to duke it out for the WBC super welterweight crown this Saturday (Sunday in Manila).

As of Wednesday, MySportsbook.com closed its book with Mayweather a favorite to defeat De La Hoya at -170 (a $100 bet wins $70), while De La Hoya is a +140 underdog (a $100 bet wins $140).

Mayweather arrived at about 11:30 a.m. on a big truck with his face and a big "World's Best Pound-for-Pound" sign scribbled across the vehicle. He was accompanied by his entourage made up of rappers and his training team.

A crowd of close to 3,000 eager fans packed the MGM Grand lobby, with their cameras in tow, all trying to vie for position to get a good angle at Mayweather, who is acknowledged as the world's best fighter pound-for-pound.

Eric Gomez, Golden Boy Promotions vice-president, described the fan turnout as "amazing" and swore he had never seen anything quite like this event.

"The crowd was fantastic. Everybody was just too eager to see the two fighters," said ALA manager Michael Aldeguer, who was among those who waited at the lobby together with his ward Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista and AJ Banal.

De La Hoya made his own grand entrance at the hotel lobby at around 12:30 p.m. accompanied by GBP chief executive officer Richard Schaefer and trainer Freddie Roach.

The same group of fans who trooped to see Mayweather also lingered around to get a close look at De La Hoya, who has been secretly working out at a Las Vegas gym for days after arriving from his main training camp in Puerto Rico.

The golden boy then took part in a closed-door afternoon workout with Bautista and Banal. The two, along with Aldeguer and wife Christine, as well as an HBO crew were the only ones allowed inside the gym.

De La Hoya and Mayweather take part in today's final press conference before the official weigh-in this Friday.

Ring Magazine, the acknowledged bible of boxing, reported in its June 2007 issue that 12 out of 20 boxing experts it interviewed have favored Mayweather to defeat De la Hoya, with only 8 favoring the latter.

But Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao said in a recent interview with The Freeman's Emmanuel Villaruel that De La Hoya will win by unanimous decision over Mayweather.
